Mating season is a make-or-break period for New Zealand dairy operations, where a poor run directly impacts herd productivity and farm viability for the year ahead.

I led the redesign of Halter’s core mating surface, introducing an optimum insemination window chart to eliminate guesswork from time-sensitive breeding decisions.

From First Principles

Collaborated with the Behaviour and ML teams to understand how the heat model functions and map out available data parameters. I then explored multiple visualisation concepts - ranging from linear progress bars to bell-curve distribution models - to land on the clearest way to surface breeding windows. The objective was pairing instant visual clarity with the detail required for confident field decision

Designs Informed by Testing

Tested multiple concepts internally and directly with farmers in the field. Through continuous testing, I converged on a concept that simplified complex heat duration data into clear visual cues - giving farmers precise timing recommendations to maximise conception rates.

Iterations after iteration, came to a concept that seemed to be best. This became a core capability to Halter’s heat detection platform. A Full Suite of Features

Beyond the chart, I designed a unified mating experience that gives farmers complete operational visibility throughout the season. By combining real-time heat alerts, macro performance analytics, and individual cow reproductive histories, the platform equips farmers to act on data at every stage of the breeding cycle.

Validating Impact Beyond Beta

I tracked success during the beta phase through direct farmer sentiment and usage metrics, ensuring the feature truly simplified time-sensitive field decisions. The positive feedback carried straight into full rollout, establishing the optimum window chart as an indispensable daily tool for the peak mating season.

Visualizing heat duration alongside these specific timing blocks emerged as the winning direction, making complex model outputs instantly readable without visual clutter.
